(62% mourvedre, 34% grenache and 4% counoise; from a north-facing slope at 2,700 feet!): Dark red. Raspberry, leather, game and a whiff of tree bark on the nose; very mourvedre. Supple and sweet on entry, with raspberry and smoke flavors nicely framed by harmonious acidity. Then turns a tad dry on the back half, finishing with substantial dusty tannins. I'd give this delicate, highly aromatic wine a year or two in bottle to harmonize, at which point it may well merit an outstanding rating.

The 2011 Caldera is composed of 62% Mourvedre and the rest Counoise and Grenache aged 18 months in neutral wood. It reveals blueberry, dusty, loamy soil, black currant and cherry characteristics, surprisingly sweet tannin for Mourvedre, and a round, brooding, rustic personality. It is ideal for drinking over the next 3-4 years. Tel. (707) 252-7477

The 2011 Caldera impresses for its elegance and pure textural silkiness. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, leather and licorice notes meld together in a perfumed, fragrant Rhone blend. In 2011, the Caldera is distinctly savory, high-toned and delicate, but it is the wine's finish that impresses above all else. Caldera is 62% Mourvedre, 34% Grenache and 4% Counoise from Goldbud Vineyard in El Dorado.
