Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino. The year of record summer temperatures, the region saw virtually no rain between May and the end of August. High-elevation vineyards performed the best. Rain in early September saved the harvest for many. A notable success in very trying circumstances. Like many of the best 2003s from Bordeaux and Burgundy, this is a revelation. No sign of drying out, or aged/baked characters. Evolved, but in a very positive way. Notes of dark plum and prune, with a savoury, slightly herbal finish. Smooth, fine tannins, good length to finish. A very impressive result in 2003. (AH)

Bibi Graetz

Based just outside Florence, Bibi Graetz is something of a maverick in the Tuscan wine scene. Working with old vineyards of indigenous grapes around Chianti, he produces intense wines classified as IGT Toscana; not fitting neatly in either the Super Tuscan or Chianti camp.
