The 1998 Richebourg Grand Cru likely made for quite dramatic drinking in its youth, but today, it comes across as rather stylized, its aromas of dark cassis fruit competing with lavish applications of toasty new oak that contribute prominent aromas of caramel, vanilla and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and ample but not terribly harmonious, with unresolved oak tannins poking out on the back end. This was a challenging vintage, of course, but the 1996 Richebourg has not aged especially gracefully.

Everything one could want from a young burgundy with its peacock's tail of spicy fruit, remarkably intense flavors, firm yet velvety tannins and staggering length. The wine simply exudes class. This is astoundingly good and should age for 20 years or more. A great, great Richebourg, which may one day rival Anne's greatest wine to date, the 1993 Richebourg. One of the top ten wines I have tasted from 1998.

The medium to dark ruby-colored 1998 Richebourg has a spice and red fruit-scented nose. Full-bodied, sweet, and supple, this satin-textured wine has outstanding depth to its red fruit-flavored character. This feminine, well-defined, and elegant Richebourg has loads of well-ripened tannins, providing it with a firm backbone. Projected maturity: 2002-2010. Jun 2000, www.robertparker.com
