Score 90/100 · Drink 2022-2036, Neal Martin, Jan 2023

The 2005 Marquis d'Alesme Becker has a slightly rustic nose of loamy red berry fruit, dried blood and sandalwood. It does not quite have the finesse of more recent vintages. Likewise, the palate is broad-shouldered, stocky and a bit rough around the edges, yet I admire its weight and density. A few more years in bottle should see it develop into a fine, if rugged, Margaux.

Tasted blind. Dark ruby. Pure, minerally nose. Very juicy and transparent. Then with quite chunky dry tannins. Very savoury, almost salty. I think it will come right but needs time. (JR)

Very dark. Sweet, quite juicy fruit on the front palate but all tightens up pretty markedly on the finish. Something green here as though the tannins didn’t get ripe. (JR)
