This is a vintage with plenty of structure, and things remain a little closed even at 7 years old. Give it time to unroll the blackberry and bilberry fruits, and enjoy the oyster shell salinity on the mouthwatering finish, together with a curl of crayon, woodsmoke and soy that add length and an umami touch. Harvest October 4 to October 14. Marjolaine de Coninck technical director and CEO, owner Nathalie Perrodo.

The 2016 Marquis d'Alesme Becker was tasted from two bottles. The first was corked and the second just felt fatigued. I’m not sure what is going on here, because this Margaux is in the middle of a purple patch at the moment. Oh, well.

Tasted blind. First bottle light TCA . Second bottle: Dark crimson. Full and round with intense ripe fruit. Rich and sweet but not horribly sickly. Rather drying finish though. (JR)
