This bottle of Pernot's 1996 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is showing immaculately, offering up notes of citrus oil, buttered toast, pear, white flowers, honeycomb and iodine. Medium to full-bodied, layered and incisive, with a racy spine of acidity and chalky grip, it's satiny and impressively concentrated, with a muscular, tightly wound profile.

Brooding, backward nose suggests pineapple and spring flowers. Large-scaled and powerful; fills the mouth with exotic and dried fruits, as well as iodine and floral suggestions. Very strong extract, pronounced acids, and muscular structure suggest that this almost painfully young wine will need considerable aging before it expresses its full personality.
