Bright, moderately saturated medium ruby. Rather wound-up aromas of blueberry and cassis are complicated by menthol, mocha, bitter chocolate and spicy oak. Sweet and pliant on entry, then notably firmer in the middle palate, with its dark berry flavors joined by mint and herb notes and a hint of graphite minerality. The wine's tongue-dusting tannins are nicely integrated, and its finish displays good energy and lift. I'd still hold this Cabernet for another year or two for more sweetness and give. (14.8% alcohol; from the McWilliams Oakville Vineyard)

(with 2% petit verdot): Very ripe aromas and flavors of cassis, licorice and bitter chocolate. Sweet, generous and easygoing, offering good energy and plenty of immediate appeal. The dusty tannins will not get in the way of enjoying this wine right now.

I have been following Plumpjack since first visiting the winery nearly a decade ago. This is a stunning set of wines from winemaker Tony Biagi, who has succeeded in achieving both astonishing richness and finesse pretty much across the board. The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful wine. Freshly cut flowers, dark red berries, mint and crushed rocks are some of the nuances that flow from this highly articulated, engaging red. Despite its richness and obvious size, the 2009 retains remarkable freshness, clarity and precision. This is a terrific showing.
