The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino is by far one of the strangest and most atypical wines of this tasting. It opens to darkly saturated concentration and one-track aromas that encompass the entire mint leaf family: Mint tea, mint sauce, peppermint mouthwash and dried mint leaves that you might find at a Middle Eastern market. There’s some dark chocolate, crushed mineral and lead pencil thrown in there as well. The mouthfeel is thin and streamlined. I must say I liked the wine, despite its nonconformist aromatic display. Drink: 2014-2024.

Red-ruby color. Brooding aromas of dark berries, black cherry, spicecake, truffle and sexy oak. Initially a bit clenched in the mouth, but grew suppler with aeration to show well-delineated dark berry and licorice flavors and lovely inner-palate lift. Still rather closed on the back end, but the firm tannins are nicely ripe.

Deep and healthy crimson. Broad and briary in a Hermitage way. Succulence. Some treacle hints on top of sandy tannins. Pretty hot. Some oak still in evidence. (JR)
