Score 88/100 · Drink 2016-2018, David Schildknecht, Vinous, May 2016

A greenhouse-like amalgam of flowering and leafing things in the nose leads to a firm palate marked by bright fresh lime with an undertone of chalk. A juicily sustained finish serves for refreshment and considerable flavor interest by the standards of a generic Gutsriesling. (This wine’s off-dry “Riesling Tradition” counterpart, while marginally recommendable, wanted a bit for clarity and personality by comparison.)

Robert Weil's 2014 Riesling trocken offers a very clear, precise and aromatic white peach aroma that is already quite upfront. The wine is intense and racy on the palate, with power and juiciness but also a coolish soul on both nose and palate. This is small, dry Spätlese that was picked with 87° Oechsle, and its racy acidity is well buffered by the mineral extract. Impressive and already enjoyable.
