The 2014 Dürnsteiner Riesling Ried Kellerberg Smaragd opens with a lovely clear apricot and smoky stone aroma. Very intense and concentrated on the palate, with cooked apricot flavors, this is a tension-filled, stony/mineral and really vibrant Riesling; it has grip and great aging potential. Keep this wine for 4-5 years, although it will still be great in ten and even 15 years.

Like its Loibenberg counterpart, this bottling, raised partly in tank and partly in cask, delivers a striking combination of density and lees-enrichment with clarity and buoyancy. But there is none of that Loibenberg’s lusciously fruity sense of ripeness or its savory salinity. Instead, one finds a tart amalgam of citrus and crab apple with a mineral infusion of ash and peppery crushed stone, leading to a long and invigorating but slightly austere finish.
