A blend of six barrels, the 1968 Rivesaltes is a blend of Grenache Gris and Grenache Blanc that lends this a rancio style. I love the nose with stewed figs, Medjool dates, a touch of toffee and smoke. The palate is sharp and penetrating on the entry with a superb bead of acidity that is beautifully balanced with hints of dark chocolate, fresh ginger, cumin and lemon thyme toward the dry, brilliantly focused finish. This is an outstanding Rivesaltes from Philippe Gayral.

Cask sample. To be bottled in July. Blend of two very different barrels. One (30%) was amber with white grapes and some rancio and one (70%) mainly Grenache Noir. Dark greenish. Very lively and sweet – acidity marked. Easy to like! Very fresh. Crisp. (JR)
