Score 88/100 · Drink 2016-2018, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2016

(14% alcohol): Good medium ruby. Roasted black fruit aromas complicated by leather, chocolate and exotic woodsmoke on the nose, plus a suggestion of hard candy. Dense and sweet but less giving than the Proprietary Red Blend, showing a slightly peppery herbal quality to the dark fruit flavors. A bit dry on the end; this rather clenched blend also betrays a faintly maderized quality. (Incidentally, a second bottle of this wine is even drier.)

(62% petit verdot and 38% cabernet sauvignon) Good full ruby-red. Notes of licorice, leather, flowers and mint on the nose. The palate offers a juicy, high-acid impression, with a leathery edge to the intense flavors of bitter cherry and dark chocolate. Conveys a slightly leafy Medoc aspect and offers lovely inner-mouth aromatic character. Finishes with firm tannins and a lingering floral quality.

Good deep ruby-red. Aromas of black fruits, licorice, violet, leather and earth. Dense, powerful and tightly coiled in the style of the vintage. Firm acidity and a distinctive floral character contribute to an impression of energy. A very young, firm, persistent wine with a lot of personality. Viader suggests serving her "V" with grilled foods. "It's not at all a sweet style of wine," she explains, "but it envelops and sweetens any food with a bitter, charred taste."
