The Poggio di Sotto 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is at the top of its aging curve, and I'm not confident that it will last too much longer. The wine is open-knit, the acidity feels contained and the tannins are resolved. However, there are oxidative notes of desiccated fruit, cured meat and tobacco. If you have a bottle, I suggest you drink it now.

A dark, towering wine, the 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is quite similar in style and personality than the straight Brunello, but it has more of a tannic spine and greater overall structure. Dark and mysterious, the 2005 is constantly changing in the glass. I imagine it will still be fabulous at age 30. This is an especially dark, almost exotic, Brunello.
The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva shows remarkable depth and concentration. It is a round, supple wine layered with wild cherries, menthol, spices and violets. The tannins are imposing but there is more than enough fruit to balance the wine's structural components. The 2005 doesn't quite reach the peak of the 2004, but it isn't too far off the mark.

There are few names in Brunello di Montalcino that rank higher than Poggio di Sotto. The estate's obsession with clonal quality, combined with its incredibly elegant winemaking style has garnered a loyal fanbase.
