Score 92/100 · Drink 2002-2017, Robert Parker, Dec 2002

The 1998 Paleo is a barrique-aged blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. Displaying a Cheval Blanc-like complexity, it offers a profound aromatic smorgasbord of spice box, cedar, licorice, menthol, and juicy black currants and blackberries. Medium to full-bodied, with superb palate presence, great precision as well as purity, and well-integrated acidity, tannin, and alcohol (13.5%) in its long, seamless finish, it should drink well for 10-15 years. Much the same color as the 1997, but even fresher. Very sweet nose, with lovely oak accompanying the cassis, plum, tar and chocolate aromas. Quite solid and substantial, rich and velvety, with spice and vanilla complementing rather than overwhelming the fruit. A layered, succulent wine with superb potential.
