Pale orangey brown. Heady and leafy and wonderfully mature but not old. An edge of decay but still sweetness. Lovely and transparent and just a hint of something medicinal. Lots of richness. Would this have been chaptalised? Or doctored a little? (JR)

The 1955 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is pure silk on the palate. Perfumed, gracious and beautifully lifted, the 1955 is as feminine as Monfortino gets. Hints of orange peel, spices and sweet tobacco linger on the close.

About the producer

Giacomo Conterno 1:1
Giacomo Conterno

Giacomo Conterno is arguably Barolo’s most celebrated estate. While most famous for its Monfortino Riserva, the quality found in every bottling of Nebbiolo and Barbera at this address makes them a benchmark producer for both varieties.
