Two 1982s from Bruno Giacosa are an unexpected but very welcome surprise. I have always adored this vintage. Both wines more than live up to my expectations. I am also quite surprised by how translucently beautiful the wines are. Giacosa’s 1982 Barolo Riserva Collina Rionda is aromatically haunting and sweet on the palate, with plenty of bright red stone fruit and rose petal notes. My only critique is that the aromatics aren’t as fresh as they are in the very best bottles. Ultimately, that’s a pretty small critique for a 34 year-old Barolo.

From the moment it is poured, I know the 1982 Barolo Riserva Collina Rionda is going to be epic. The color is breathtakingly red. Impossibly sweet, perfumed aromatics seem to magically lift out of the glass in a silky, finessed Collina Rionda that captivates all the sense with pure pleasure. I have had the 1982 many times, but it has never been this emotionally profound. This is my last bottle, and I can’t think of a better group to share it with. In one word: stunning.

A small vertical of Bruno Giacosa's legendary Barolo Collina Rionda follows. The most impressive vintage on this night is the 1982 Riserva, which captivates all of the intellectual and hedonistic senses with its striking perfume, fabulous length and stunning overall balance. The 1982 isn't a huge Rionda, but it is arguably the most refined after the 1989. Another perfect bottle from a collection I purchased years ago. Thrilling!

This bottle of the 1982 Barolo Riserva Collina Rionda was the finest I had ever had, once again leading me to question how wines sold in the US were treated during transport. A Barolo of stunning richness, the 1982 flowed from the glass with seductive layers of perfumed fruit all the way through to an eternal, hypnotic finish.
