Healthy full red. Plum, redcurrant, mocha and leather on the aromatic nose, plus hints of caraway seed, red licorice and tobacco leaf. The leathery quality carries through on the palate, giving a dusty feel to the dry flavors of currant, menthol and spices. More juicy than silky but still with decent texture, this wine may be just beyond its peak, as the tannins are a bit dusty and dry. But boasts good flavor intensity and sound acidity.

The 1983 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is one of the softest, most inviting wines in this tasting. Here it is the wine's pure texture and layers of fruit that stand out most. Leather, menthol and smoke all add nuance on the close as the wine continues to come together with time in the glass. Among Dunn's early wines, the 1983 is one of the vintages that is closest to maturity, although it will drink well for at least another handful of years. Today, the 1983 is a wine to enjoy for its soft contours and supple, inviting personality.
