Tasted at the Musigny Dinner in London, the 1998 Musigny Grand Cru from Jacques Prieur was served from magnum and was an impeccable wine, one voted by many as their favorite of this spectacular tasting. Like many wines from Prieur, it is not immediate. It needed a few minutes to shake off any bashfulness. Then it revealed a gorgeous and pure bouquet with scents of blackberry leaf, dried press flowers and minerals. It gained intensity over the course of the two or three hours in its company. The palate is beautifully balanced, delivering the horsepower you expect from a Musigny after an initial sultry spell, before fanning out with confidence on the finish, a mixture of red and black fruit, a hint of bay leaf and Earl Grey. Perhaps a wine—a Musigny—overlooked by more "sniffy" connoisseurs; they are missing out. Tasted March 2017.
