Score 86/100 · Drink 2018-2022, Neal Martin, May 2018

The 1998 Gloria has an attractive bouquet: blackberry, boysenberry and touches of game, just a little leafiness coming through though it maintains admirable delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a ferrous, spicy opening. It feels fully mature with dried blood and oxtail notes infusing the rather austere finish, but there is charm, even if it should be consumed in the near future. Tasted at the château.

This is an attractively fat, commercially-styled, surprisingly soft 1998. It displays herb-tinged berry fruit, notes of saddle leather, and a medium-bodied, round finish. It should drink well for 7-8 years.

About the producer

Ch. Gloria
Gloria

The modest Ch. Gloria was only created in the 1940s, when Henri Martin – a cooper – purchased some vines. With parcels dotted in amongst the region’s Classed Growths, it produces impressive wines. Today it's managed by Vanessa and Jean Triaud (Henri Martin’s granddaughter and grandson-in-law).
