Although this has plenty of ripeness, it’s still quite shy on the nose with some herbal freshness and savory notes, next to the blackberries. On the palate it’s dry and moderately tannic, in the way that modern Bordeaux wines are. All of that would be much more exciting, if the finish was a bit more lively. Drink or hold.

Also from Mt. Veeder, the 2016 Red Blend Fourmeaux is a step up in price yet offers more richness and depth. It too has classic notes of black fruits, black cherries, tobacco lead, graphite, and lead pencil. With full-bodied richness, a wonderful, layered, seamless texture, building tannins, and rock star concentration, it's another wine from this estate that has the richness, freshness and hallmark purity of the 2016 vintage.

The 2016 Red Blend Formeaux is comprised of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. Deep purple-black colored, it has a nose of warm blackberries, black raspberries, cassis and kirsch with hints of earth, espresso, Mediterranean herbs and crushed rocks plus a waft of cedar. Medium to full-bodied, it is firm, grainy and muscular in the mouth with a fragrant finish.
