Score 87/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2009

Full red-ruby. Very ripe but reticent aromas of currant and dark chocolate; less open than the 2006. Supple and sweet on entry, then a bit hard-edged in the middle, with a slight green edge and a gamey nuance to the flavors of currant, licorice and herbs. I find this less pliant and harmonious than the 2006, and a bit dry on the back.

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (primarily estate fruit) reveals a deep ruby/purple color as well as sweet, tarry, black currant, and chocolate notes with hints of wood smoke and spice box. Deep, layered, and impressive, it is undeniably the finest wine made by this winery, which heretofore was a notorious under-achiever. It should drink beautifully for 15 or more years. These are dramatically improved wines now that David Ramey is doing serious consulting at this winery, whose estate vineyards are superbly located adjacent to Sloan and Snowden. www.hallwines.com
