Brezza's 2013 Barolo Sarmassa opens to medium garnet intensity and provides the senses with ample cherry, cassis and cured tobacco. But like this estate's other wines from this vintage, not all its elements line up correctly. You get brief windows onto the wine's potential, but you don't fully get the whole picture.

The 2013 Barolo Sarmassa is the most inward of the 2013 Barolos. Smoke, iron, savory herbs and a host of ferrous notes abound. Powerful and also a bit rough around the edges, the 2013 is very much closed in on itself today. If it softens, the 2013 might merit a higher score, but today it is unyielding, even within the context of young Barolo.
Barolo. Tasted blind. Maturing mid ruby with orange tinges. Balsamic red fruit nose with hints of smoke. Real depth of fruit lined with bags of fine tannins. Quite stunning balance and powerfully structured. (WS)
Barolo. Pale ruby with orange tinges. The most concentrated on the nose of the three Brezza crus, with liquorice and strawberry on the nose, as well as the most approachable. Elegant yet with a firm structure and with impressive balance. A very elegant wine for this vineyard. (WS)
