Score 97/100 · Drink 2021-2030, Eric Guido, Vinous, Mar 2021

The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino at first shows aromatically dark and deep. Its color is a vivid, profound ruby, glistening in the glass and showing little evidence of its twenty years of maturity. The bouquet blossoms into a captivating display of dried cherries, dusty rose, incense and cedar contrasted by savory brown sauce and hints of grilled sage. The seamlessly silky textures communicate elegance and polish, even as they usher in a mix of tart raspberries and blackberries complicated by saturating mineral tones and impossibly young tannins. Through it all, a beam of bright acidity maintains freshness. This tapers off still structured, with a sweet-and-sour twang of spiced citrus contrasting ripe plum. The 2001 is absolutely stunning and still so full of life. This bottle was sourced directly from the winery's cellar.

The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino is just beginning to show the first signs of aromatic development, yet it remains deep, dense and concentrated on the palate. Readers who own the 2001 are in for a real treat, as it is truly spectacular today. Pomegranate, red cherry jam, blood orange and dark spice meld into the unctuous, deep finish in a superb Brunello that is both refined and powerful.

Powerful and authoritative, Salvioni’s deeply-colored 2001 Brunello di Montalcino is unquestionably one of the vintage’s top wines. It displays a tightly wound core of sweet dark fruit, marrying notable concentration with classic structure on a frame of great expansiveness and length. The 2001 Brunello saw a full four years of cask, considered long by today’s standards, yet it boasts incredible freshness, richness and vibrancy. This magical, unique Brunello of exquisite pedigree will be at its best in another few years and it should offer rewarding drinking to at least age 20. A great effort. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2021. Importer: Vias Imports, New York, NY; tel. (212) 629-0200
