Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Although there is a lot of oak on the nose of the 2011 Chambertin, it has plenty of red and black fruit on the nose with an attractive floral scent that gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, gently grippy tannins and an impressive symmetry and poise toward the finish. It does not quite have the finesse of others, but I suspect that will develop with bottle age.

In many vintages, Giroud's Chambertin needs time, but the 2011 looks like it will drink a bit earlier than many other recent versions. Soft and silky to the core, the 2011 graces the palate with striking purity and translucence. This is a decidedly feminine Chambertin that impresses for its balance.

Mid to deep crimson. Firm, subtle, polished and surprisingly approachable. More red fruit with spice on the back palate. Very very long. More to come. (JH)

Quite exciting and nervy on the nose. Dramatic. Lots of rather dry oak on the end. (JR)
