The 2015 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a rich, oily, lanolin-scented bouquet that feels a little overworked in the winery. There is a slight geranium aroma here. The palate is sweet and creamy in texture, dominated by a lot of new oak, but is there much underneath? There does not seem to be. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

(bottled in April): Bright yellow. Rather powerful scents of orange zest, yellow peach and flowers, plus an exotic whiff of mango. Fat, sweet and powerful, with an exotic fruit character that suggests a late harvest. Slightly clumsy for this premier cru but the finish shows good lift and a firm spine.

Cask sample. Bought recently. Red soils that are pretty powerful with big stones. Worked by horse in some years but not in 2015. 25% slope. Lean and fine in terms of build. Not too fat! Sleek and a bit of a ballet dancer. Floral hints. Lots of juice. (JR)
