Score 96/100 · Drink 2024-2060, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Apr 2024

Harvested very ripe yet fermented quickly and thus already bottled in September of the following year, the golden-colored 2004 Riesling Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann opens with deep and intense fruit intermingled with earthy/mineral and sage aromas. Enormously vital and mineral on the palate, this is an intense and full-bodied yet also finessed and tensioned Rangen whose richness is impressively uplifted. In fact, and despite its warmth, this is a classic Rangen with enormous complexity and length yet without providing too much alcohol or muscles. This is an immortal long-distance runner that is great to enjoy at this stage, but it might become even celestial in 10 years. 14.2% alcohol with 6.2 grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted in Wachenheim, Pfalz, on November 19, 2023.

(14.2% alcohol with 6.2 g/l r.s.) Deep yellow. Very ripe nose offers pineapple, flint, smoke and cumin. Rich and powerful but quite backward today, even a bit youthfully bitter. In comparison, the 2005 came across as finer. Strong earthy low tones. Finishes with a distinct tannic impression. "Fully 90% of the grapes were blue, but they weren't VT in style, they weren't furry," noted Humbrecht.
