The 1997 Barbaresco Camp Gros comes across as a bit reduced. There is a wild, animalistic streak running through the 1997 Camp Gros, which detracts from its typical appeal. The flavors are nicely layered and explosive, but the aromatics are a bit too forward. I imagine the 1997 will drink best sooner rather than later.

Medium red, with a hint of amber. Perfumed, pinot-like aromas of wild strawberry, dried flowers and menthol. The fullest and biggest of the three '97 releases, but rather closed today in the middle palate. Boasts a strong tannic structure, but these are completely different tannins than those of the Gaiun, which are more influenced by the barriques The longest and subtlest of the '97s here, but still a bit dry and green on the back end. The estate declined to show its '98 Barbarescos.
