(all barrel-fermented, using 50% new oak; still on its lees) Aroma of peach nectar.Plump and leesy, with rich, sweet fruit accented by honey and spice notes and framed by sound acidity. Not yet complex but thick and concentrated, not to mention long on the aftertaste. This went through malolactic fermentation. This wine and all of the Alban wines that follow are estate bottlings.

The 2004 Viognier exhibits the smoky, exotic side of this varietal. Notes of honeysuckle, peaches, and apricots along with good underlying acidity are found in this ripe, medium to full-bodied, fragrant Viognier. It is best consumed during its first year of life. (Price not yet determined) The pioneer of Rhone Ranger wines in the Central Coast, Alban Vineyards has become an educational center and mecca for young winemakers who want to pursue careers with Syrah, Grenache, Roussanne, Viognier, and Mourvedre. The question I ask every time I taste through John Alban’s portfolio is “why has no one else in Edna Valley captured the extraordinary magic he has from his hillside vineyards?” Tel. (805) 546-0305
