Stunning stuff and a blend of 43% Grenache, 37% Mourvedre and 20% Syrah, the 2009 Favia Rompecabezas is a knockout effort that has a serious, old-world feel in its minerality, concentration, and richness. Delivering classic southern Rhône like aromas and flavors of black raspberries, melted licorice, crushed stone, garrigue, and hints of cured meats, it flows onto the palate with a voluptuous, decadent texture that stays light, balanced, and oh so drinkable. Put this in a blind lineup of ’07 Châteauneuf-du-Papes and let me know the results. My money is on it doing quite well. Already delicious and approachable, it nevertheless has the depth and balance to evolve gracefully. Enjoy it over the coming decade.
