Score 94/100 · Drink 2004-2020, Robert Parker, Jun 2001

A backward wine is the 1998 Shiraz Apricot Block. Made from relatively young vines (7 years in age), this 100% Shiraz shows an opaque garnet/purple color and a sweet nose of melted asphalt, smoke, blackberry, and cassis. Extremely full-bodied with great intensity, tremendous purity, and impeccable overall harmony among its rather large-scale elements, this dense, super-extracted wine should be at its best between 2004-2020. Moderately saturated medium ruby. Grapey, peppery nose dominated by high-toned oak. Game, pepper and spice flavors offer moderate depth, texture and nuance. Finishes with rather supple tannins and a suggestion of greenness.
