Score 94/100 · Drink 2016-2026, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jul 2016

Domenico Clerico's 2005 Barolo Pajana is a dark, sensual beauty. The tannins the wine had when young have softened, allowing the fruit to come through loud and clear. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, orange peel and leather all meld together. Sumptuous, forward and deeply expressive, the 2005 will drink well for another decade or so. This is a terrific showing from Domenico Clerico. Simply put, the 2005 is in the zone right now.

Mid ruby. Quite dramatic nose with a hint of oak. Savoury and still quite dry. Pretty youthful. Hang on to this. Drying finish at the moment. Quite chunky. (JR)

Good deep red. Expressive aromas of raspberry, plum, strawberry, brown spices, mocha and chestnut, along with some sexy nutty oak. Sweet and pliant on entry but less harmonious than the young 2006: with moderate depth, the acids come across as less integrated and the slightly spiky tannins cut off the wine's fruit on the back. This will need a few years of patience.

Mid ruby. Really complex exciting wine – a step up from most of what I've tasted so far. Pure, correct, youthful. (JR)
