Score 89/100 · Drink 1998-2008, Robert Parker, Apr 1998

Spain's most consistently great winery continues to turn out exciting wines. The less expensive 1992 Valbuena exhibits an evolved dark plum color, and a delightfully smoky, tarry, charcoal, and caramel-scented nose with plenty of jammy black cherry and currant fruit. Ripe, fruity, round, and velvety-textured, this is an opulent, lush, soft wine to drink now and over the next decade. Importer: A Christopher Cannan Selection, Europvin USA, Watertown, MA; tel. Good deep red. Complex, maturing aromas of redcurrant, mocha, tar, cedar, smoke, meat, iron and tobacco. Intensely flavored and initially quite dry-edged, like a maturing St. Julien, but showed a lusher texture and lovely sweet fruit with extended aeration. A strong effort for the vintage.
