(aged in about 60% new French oak, including a new foudre and some 600-liter puncheons): Deep medium ruby. Inky aromas of black cherry, licorice and violet. Penetrating dark fruit flavors are complicated by an iron-like suggestion of fresh blood. Still quite tightly wound, even a bit reduced, and showing limited early sweetness. Densely packed, powerfully structured wine with serious tannic support and outstanding thrust. From big clusters with small berries, according to winemaker Christophe Baron, who suggests that this wine will make "a great substitute for Cabernet with red meat." Spreads out nicely on the ripely tannic, subtly long back end.

One of the wines of the vintage is the 2013 Impulsivo. Made from 100% Tempranillo and with only 214 cases made, it has incredible notes of bloody meats, cold fireplace, black cherries, currants and cedar. This gives way to a full-bodied, concentrated, structured 2013 that will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring and drink well for a decade or more past that.
