In the same ballpark, the 2003 Hermitage shows some evolution in its smoked meats, dried herbs, spice and dusty pebble-driven bouquet. Giving up more red and black fruits on the palate, it has plenty of texture, fine tannin and a solid finish. It too is drinking nicely, and should have another 5-7 years of longevity. The young rugby player (and now couch) Yann Chave did well in the vintage, with both his Crozes Hermitage and Hermitage being outstanding.

Inky opaque ruby. Explosively rich bouquet of superripe blackberry, cassis, cherry compote, resiny tobacco, espresso, star anise and dark chocolate. A massive, dense wine with great weight and a lush, thick texture. The flavors of berry liqueur, cherry preserves, candied rose, violet and licorice are both expansive and focused. Impressively long finish displays an urgent note of creme de cassis and a kick of fruity black pepper.
