Fleshy, rich and fat on the nose and palate, with layers of peach melba and vanilla-cream flavour. Very lengthy – really maximises the potential of Viognier, and has a brightness to the finish which is very welcome too. Warm alcohol might put some people off. (RH)

Pale yellow-gold. Ripe nectarine, orange, honey and violet scents are lifted by a smoky mineral note. Stains the palate with vibrant citrus and pit fruit flavors that show superb delineation and back-end thrust. Aeration brings out subtle iodine and chamomile qualities. Shows impressive focus and mineral cut on the finish, which hangs on with strong, floral-tinged persistence.

Stephan commented that he did everything he could to maintain freshness in his 2015 whites, and he’s done a fabulous job with both Condrieu releases. The 2015 Condrieu La Combe de Malleval comes from two separate parcels and offers a textbook array of apricot, flower oil, crushed rocks and sappy flowers, with building depth and richness on the palate. It’s a gorgeous Condrieu that will be even better this time next year and drink well for 4-5 years at a minimum.
