The 2005 Barolo San Rocco offers lovely immediacy, but next to Azelia's other 2005s, it comes across as a bit flat and one-dimensional. Still, all things considered, the 2005 has aged well and appears to have enough pedigree to drink well for another decade or so. The flavors are dark, bold and incisive, with plenty of new French oak influence. The San Rocco was aged in French oak barrels of which around 30% were new.

This has calmed down nicely but still seems a little modern and wearing its oak on its sleeve. Mature red wine rather than definitively Barolo. A bit chewy and tough on the end. A tad flashy. (JR)

Mid ruby. Lively nose – much the best Azelia wine in this collection. Dried roses. Then considerable fruit still. For those who like their Barolo beefy! Tangy finish. (JR)

Good dark red. Brooding aromas of black fruits, licorice and spices. A step up in density, breadth and sweetness from this producer's other 2005 Barolos; in fact, this is quite suave and full. Best today on the horizontal, ripely tannic finish, which offers intriguing balsamic and mineral traces. Like his other crus, this is aged in about 40% new barriques: Azelia has cut back steadily on the percentage of new oak in recent vintages.
