Tasted blind. Mid ruby colour. Subdued aromatically. Lithe and red-fruited on the palate, which is marked by zesty and almost tart acidity. Slender. Perhaps too much so. (TP)

The 2017 Le Carillon d'Angélus is airy, open-knit and inviting. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, cedar, mint and dried flowers all grace this very pretty, understated Saint-Émilion. Just as it was en primeur, the Carillon gives the impression of a wine that will drink well early.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Le Carillon d'Angélus delivers notes of warm black plums, wild blueberries and black cherries plus wafts of fallen leaves and cinnamon stick. Medium-bodied, the palate has impressive freshness and energy with rounded tannins and a wonderfully pure finish.

The 2017 Carillon d’Angélus suffered 80% loss due to frost. It has a lifted bouquet with red berry fruit, slightly ferrous in style, just a touch of truffle emerging with time. I find this rather rustic. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, again, slightly irony with a light finish that suggests this should be consumed in its youth.
