Score 87/100 · Drink 2023-2024, Neal Martin, Dec 2023

Given the vintage, the 1969 Beychevelle is probably a wine that you would only approach with a long stick. But this bottle far exceeds expectations. Fragrant on the nose, it offers whispers of black fruit and tobacco, gaining intensity and becoming quite Pauillac-like in style. The palate is marked by sharp acidity, but it is cohesive and fresh with just a touch of VA on the finish. Would I have a second glass? Maybe not. But I finished the first. Tasted at 67 Pall Mall at Chelsea Vintners' The Complete Bordeaux Vintage Guide dinner.

About the producer

Château Beychevelle 1:1
Beychevelle

With greater care in the vineyard and more precision in the winery, Ch. Beychevelle's star is rising. That's in large part due to the leadership of Philippe Blanc and investment by current owners, Japanese brewers Suntory and French wine group Castel.
