The 1988 Pavie is a vintage I have met a couple of times before, this predating Gérard Perse’s acquisition in 1997. It has an attractive old school nose of light black fruit, roof tiles and cedar; a little diffuse but still fresh. The palate is medium-bodied with a tart cherry entry, wild mushroom and sandalwood. It lacks some depth on the finish but it is still perfectly drinkable, if missing a bit of excitement after 30 years. Tasted at the château.

The backward 1988 Pavie is a structured, tannic wine, balanced nicely by elegant, ripe, tobacco and black cherry-scented fruit, good acidity, and a long, spicy, tannic finish. Anticipated maturity: 1995-2005.
Very mature for its age, this has light aroma of leaves and fruit. Medium- to light-bodied, with medium tannins and a dry, astringent finish. A bit disappointing.--1988 Bordeaux horizontal. Drink now. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 1998

About the producer
The slopes of Château Pavie were planted as far back as the fourth century by the Ancient Romans and it has been a well-known producer in Saint-Émilion since the middle of the 19th century.
