In the early and mid-1970s, this wine was attractive, flavorful, spicy, with above-average fruity intensity for the vintage. Now, the wine has lost that exuberant fruitiness and begun to fade badly. Some fruit still remains, but this wine should have been drunk up prior to 1980. Last tasted, 3/81.

With greater care in the vineyard and more precision in the winery, Ch. Beychevelle's star is rising. That's in large part due to the leadership of Philippe Blanc and investment by current owners, Japanese brewers Suntory and French wine group Castel.
