Saturated ruby. Spice- and smoke-accented dark berries, cherry pit, tobacco and succulent herbs on the nose. Youthfully chewy cassis and bitter cherry flavors take on a floral quality with air. A peppery note adds spicy cut to a persistent finish shaped by steadily building tannins.

Firmly tannic and a touch herbal, d'Arenberg's 2016 The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon is a touch disappointing in the context of the lineup. Right now, it reveals hints of bell pepper on the nose, alongside notes of mint, cedar and cassis. It's medium to full-bodied, firm and linear on the palate, with a bit of excess astringency on the finish. Will another five years of cellaring turn things around? It should be better, but it will never be a rich, hedonistic offering.

Very deep-set and ripe blackcurrant and creme de cassis aromas here with a deep, tarry edge, as well as eucalyptus and licorice. The palate is full-bodied and has a very firm, assertive tannin core with density and length. Needs time. Try from 2024. Screw cap.
