Dark, shimmering ruby. Intense red and dark berry, licorice, pipe tobacco and potpourri aromas are lifted by a smoky mineral nuance. Sappy, coiled black currant and bitter cherry flavors deepen and become sweeter with air. Smoothly blends power and finesse and finishes impressively long and spicy, displaying sharp focus and even tannins.

My favorite red in the Yeringberg lineup tends to be the winery's estate red. The 2017 Proprietary Red—a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec—is fragrant and herbal, but it comes dangerously close to being vegetal, with clear glimpses of bell pepper on the nose. Medium-bodied and streamlined on the palate, with a rigid frame of barely ripe tannins, it's a throwback to traditional Bordeaux in style (but without any barnyard or horse). Give it a few years in the cellar, and it should develop some appealing tobacco and earth complexities.

There’s a bold, juicy and foresty feel to this Bordeaux-inspired blend that has a wealth of summer-berry, bracken and leafy aromas. The palate is fresh, juicy and elegantly structured with good richness and freshness of blueberries and cassis. A blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon, 16% cabernet franc, 13% merlot, 6% petit verdot and 5% malbec. Drink now or hold. Screw cap.
