The 1981 Figeac is a viable wine that exhibits some of the estate's telltale signatures, but it doesn't number among the top successes of the vintage. Exhibiting aromas of dried berries, cigar wrapper, loamy soil and black truffle, it's medium-bodied, with largely melted tannins and initially assertive acids that integrate with an hour or two in the decanter. While this isn't a profound Figeac, it does improve considerably with aeration; so, that's warmly recommended to get the best out of it.

Not terribly impressive, either from the cask or in the bottle, the 1981 Figeac tastes like a rather dull, commercial sort of wine. It is herbaceous, very soft, velvety, and medium bodied, with light tannins, and a low acidity that points to a rapid maturation. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 3/88. Sitting on the border with Pomerol, Ch. Figeac is a distinguished Saint-Emilion estate that produces some of the region's most sought-after wines. As of 2022, it is officially classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé A, one of the appellation's top estates along with Ch. Pavie.
