Score 91/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Nov 2013

(aged for 14 months in 500-liter tonneaux, one-third of them new): Good bright red-ruby. Sexy aromas of violet, licorice, spices, mocha and espresso. Silky, rich and dry, with serious weight and density for barbera. Combines strong acidity and light tannins. Made with very healthy grapes from a warm vintage, according to Sandrone.

Luciano Sandrone's trademark style comes through in the 2011 Barbera d'Alba. A juicy, succulent wine, the 2011 wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth and pure texture. Black cherries, plums, licorice, asphalt and French oak all flesh out in a voluptuous, sexy Barbera to drink now and over the next few years. This is a relatively laid back style for 2011, but there is a lot to like.
