Saturated, deep red-ruby. Superripe aromas of black raspberry and minerals. Dense, silky and superripe, with very rich, fat black raspberry and currant flavors lifted by an invigorating touch of minerality. Perhaps not quite as expressive today as the Beaumonts but a bit more vibrant. The ripe, strong tannins come late, allowing the sweet fruit to expand.

The 2003 Echezeaux, the finest I’ve encountered at Domaine Grivot, comes forth with delightful aromas of fresh, sweet blackberries and violets. An ample, medium to full-bodied wine, it expands on the palate to display intensely powerful tar-laced black cherries. Satin-textured and impeccably ripe, it vaunts impressive depth, concentration, and a long finish studded with structure-providing tannin. This exceptional Echezeaux should be drunk between 2010 and 2020+. Importer: Diageo Chateau and Estate Wines Company., New York, NY; tel. (212) 419-1400

Saturated bright red-ruby. Knockout extroverted nose combines black raspberry, minerals, baking spices, orange peel, earth and bitter chocolate. Extremely suave on entry, then much less obvious and sweet in the middle than the nose suggests. Superripe but with strong minerality and sound acidity giving it cut and clarity. Juicy and a bit tightly wound, with firm underlying structure. Finishes with toothcoating tannins and a wave of fruit.
