Score 88/100 · Drink 2002-2006, Robert Parker, Aug 2002

There are 2,021 cases of the 2000 Chardonnay Belle Cote, which is produced from three clones of Chardonnay, the Wente, Rued, and See. Approximately 60% new French oak was used by former winemaker Vanessa Wong. This lightweight effort reveals a greenish hue to the light gold color. While the aromatics are terrific, they are deceptive as the wine does not possess comparable richness or length. It is well-defined, with honeyed citrus characteristics, noticeable acidity, and a surprisingly short finish. Lemon zest and citrus are the dominant flavor components, with the wood kept in the background. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. Tel. (707) 942-4459; Fax (707) 942-0209

Slightly deeper color than the Carriere; faintly hazy. Complex, precise, perfumed aromas of flower blossom, citrus peel, lichee, licorice and white pepper, with riper hints of mandarin orange and tangerine. A step up in concentration and flavor complexity from the Carriere, with more texture and extract. Still quite youthfully firm-edged on the finish.
