1995 Georges Roumier - Chambolle-Musigny

Exhibiting a fabulous nose of super-sweet spicy red cherry fruit and violets, the ruby/purple-colored Chambolle-Musigny is a terrific example of how good village wines could be if more Burgundian vignerons cared as much as Roumier about vineyard work and winemaking. Earthy, floral, and perfumed red fruit flavors, excellent balance, a medium body and an appropriately long finish make this supple wine a lovely bottle to drink over the next 5-7 years. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. The wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. Pinot Noir, a fragile varietal, reacts poorly to fining, filtration, and careless bottling techniques, I recommend caution when considering buying a red burgundy based on cask samples. I called it as I tasted it, and hope the bottled wine reflects the quality of the samples I was provided. The harvest took place here on September 29 for the Corton-Charlemagne and between October 2 and 9 for the reds. Yields averaged 28 hectoliters/hectare. Overall, Roumier's 1995s are stunning wines. Light-medium red. Rather complex aromas of raspberry, coffee, herbs, smoke and graphite, plus a floral topnote. Then sweet but rather closed in the mouth, with a strong fruit component and solid underlying structure. Serious and substantial for a village wine; will be excellent with a few years of patience.
