The 2009 Sigalas Rabaud is a splendid Sauternes, and juxtaposed against the 2005, I actually prefer this vintage. This bottle surpasses the one served blind at the Ten-Year-On blind tasting. The bouquet races out of the blocks with pure botrytized fruit, clear honey, macadamia nuts, saffron and a touch of orange rind. There is real vibrancy and delineation. The palate is well-balanced with impressive depth, gaining complexity with aeration and delivering a dense and powerful finish with requisite finesse. Marvelous. Tasted from a bottle sent directly from Sigalas Rabaud to the UK.

The 2009 Sigalas-Rabaud has a rather light bouquet that lacks the intensity of its peers. It needs more vigour. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, nicely balanced and lightly spiced with ginger and rhubarb towards the finish. I have encountered better bottles in the past, hence my question mark. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.
Tasted blind. Gold with a greenish tinge. Hint of ginger. Not the freshest. And very, very sweet. Just a bit sickly. (JR)
