In 2013, the Barolo Piè Franco is decidedly austere and tannic. Readers should be in no rush to open bottles, not that that should be a problem. The 2013 Barolo Piè Franco has a bit more tannic spine and energy than the Rupestris tasted alongside it. Fresh, brisk and beautifully delineated, the 2013 has been nothing less than utterly exquisite on both occasions I have tasted it recently. If the past is any indication, the 2013 will almost certainly gain volume with further time in bottle I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle any time soon and imagine the 2013 will still be striking several decades from now. Readers who can find the 2013 should not hesitate.

Serralunga d’Alba’s Cappellano is one of Barolo’s most legendary producers, producing ultra-traditional styles of Nebbiolo. Made famous by Teobaldo and now in the hands of his son Augusto, the estate is best known for its Barolo Piè Franco, a wine from ungrafted vines in the Gabutti Cru.
