Christophe Roumier produces a Corton-Charlemagne from a parcel on the Pernand-Vergelesses side of the Corton hillside. The 2000 displays a wonderfully rich nose of anise, spices, and ripe pears. Medium-bodied, it is plush, intricate, highly expressive, and jam-packed with flavor. Mint, coffee, poached pears, clover, and minerals can be discerned in its softly-textured character. Drink this lovely wine over the next 8-9 years. Importer: Diageo Chateau and Estate Wines Company, New York, NY; tel; (212) 572-7725

Sulphidy nose but ungainly on the palate. Very, very pale and something charred in the flavour. Very ripe fruit but the oak seems rather rough. (JR)
